Question:
Hello, I have an older Load Trail trailer and I am looking to change the brakes on it in the near future. They’re 7k axles and the drums have AL-KO 8480 stamped on them. I was wondering if you were able to tell me what drum/hubs I would need as well as which brake assemblies I would need based off these numbers or if you need more

Hey Jeff,
AL-KO has been out of business for a while, but I found some specs for it online. From what I could find, the AL-KO 8480 hub has an 8 on 6 1/2" bolt pattern and works with 12" x 2" brakes. The bearings should be 25580 (inner), 14125A (outer), and a #10-36 seal with 2.25" ID and 3.376" OD. You'll want to check if the studs are 1/2" or 9/16" diameter (so you can use the same wheels) and verify that the bearings and seals are correct.
If you have 1/2" wheel studs, I recommend using the Easy Grease Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for 5.2K - 7K Axles - 12" - 8 on 6.5 - Pre-Greased # AKHD-865-7-2-EZ-K.
If you have 9/16" wheel studs, you'll want to use the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 7,000-lb Axles - 12" Diameter - 8 on 6-1/2 - Pre-Greased Part # AKHD-865-7-1-K.
The Dexter Electric Trailer Brakes part # 23-180-181 you were looking at, are a good fit for either of these hubs. They do fit a 5-bolt mounting flange, so you'll want to make sure your flange is 5-bolt. Some older AL-KO axles didn't use 5-bolt flanges, so if it's not 5-bolt let us know so we can figure something else out for you. The Dexter brakes are manual adjusting brakes, so if you prefer self-adjusting, so you don't have to worry about remembering to adjust them, I recommend the etrailer Electric Trailer Brakes - 5.2K to 7K part # AKEBRK-7-SA instead.
What do you usually haul with your old Load Trail?
