Hi Kathy,

The SmartPlug RV Power Cord Adapter part # SM64FR can be used to plug your generator into the truck bed outlet as long as it's connecting to a 30-amp Smart Plug inlet on your travel trailer. The SmartPlug adapter is a proprietary asymmetrical shape so it will only work with SmartPlug inlets.

It's important to note, that even though the trailer end of the adapter is 30-amps, you'll be limited to the 15 amps from the truck which is roughly 1,800 watts. Your converter should draw 5 to 12 amps AC depending on your charger size, so you'll want to check that your converter/charger can handle that much draw. High energy appliances like the AC or microwave shouldn't be turned on while you're plugged into a 15-amp source because it will overload the circuit and trip the breaker on the truck's generator.

Being plugged in is totally fine while parked but definitely shouldn't be done while driving. If you're wanting to charge the batteries while driving, I suggest using a DC-to-DC battery charger like the Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger DC to DC - 12V/24V - 50 Amp Part # 331-BCDC1250D. This charger installs in the truck or trailer and is dual input, so the yellow wire can be connected to solar panels or the red wire to the truck's 12V or 24V start battery. It's rated for 50 amps and bypasses the truck's 7-way so its capable of fully charging the auxiliary battery and maintaining it.

I believe you would be better suited with a DC to DC charging system. The Smart Plug is simply a 30/15 amp pigtail. At 4’ in length I would be surprised if this is long enough to reach your camper from the truck bed. Unless you have unlimited time to charge this is not the correct setup.
