Parts Needed to Flat Tow 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali With Blue Ox Tow Bar

Updated 09/02/2026 | Published 08/26/2026

Question:

I have a 2023 GMC Sierra Denali 4X4 with 2-speed transfer case. I currently have a blue ox tow bar 10k, but nothing else for the truck and cables, safety cables, etc. What do I need to have. Also, I understand that I have to have my battery disconnected during towing...how does the brake controller get power?

Hey Anthony! Since you already have the Blue Ox tow bar you need the base plate kit, wiring, safety cables, and brake system. I recommend the following:

-Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BLU35XR

-Blue Ox Universal Tow Bar Cover # BLU53QV (optional if you don't already have one)

-Blue Ox 7' Safety Cables - 10,000 lbs # BX88197

-Roadmaster 4-Diode Universal Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles # RM-15267

-Roadmaster Battery Disconnect # RM-766 (Gas Only)

Or

-Roadmaster Battery Disconnect # RM93MR (Diesel)

-Roadmaster Battery Charge Line Kit # RM-156-25

-Blue Ox Patriot Portable Flat Tow Brake System # BLU37TR

-Blue Ox 12 Volt Power Outlet Kit # BLU33QV

The 12V outlet will connect directly to the battery so even though it is disconnected it will still be able to power the Patriot brake system. The same is true if you use a permanent system like the Shadow 2 # RVI94FR. The charge line kit will keep the brake system from draining the battery so you don't arrive and find out the battery is dead after a long trip.

You may also need a high-low adapter like # e52ZV to keep your setup level. Measure from the ground to the center of the receiver on your motorhome. The bracket height on the base plate kit is 14" so the difference is the rise/drop you need. The "safe zone" ranges from 3" above level to 3" below level so that is your goal.

Where are you headed once you get the Sierra set up for towing?

Installed that on my 2022 gmc 1500 with duramax. It was not difficult just time consuming. Took 2 days in driveway for baseplate install battery shut off, universal wiring kit and the Demco stay-in-play. Towed to Florida from Minnesota behind gas class a with no problems. Took a little while to get the brake adjustment just right. In florida traded class a in on diesel pusher. Towed all the way back also without any issues. I did make a detailed check list for getting the truck hooked up and ready to two after reading others problems. I know the checklist by heart but I still follow it with every hook up, like a pilots check list. The stay-in-play worked flawlessly on the diesel pusher. Did not need to readjust brakes at all.

@Jeff thanks for sharing your experience! The Demco Stay-IN-Play Duo # DM86VR is another great and reliable option for a brake system. Once it is installed and adjusted you don't have to set it up each time you tow, so it is especially nice if you're towing the Sierra regularly. I also like the checklist idea, even when you know the process by heart it is an easy way to make sure nothing gets missed before you hit the road.
