Safety Chain Extensions for Excel Trailer

Question:

Hi. We have an excel trailer which can be pulled with a motorcycle or a small vehicle. Trailer only weights 300lbs so the safety chains that came with the trailer are 3/8 chains. So, when we pull with the motorcycle we have NO issues as the chain length is more than enough, however if we pull it with our vehicle the chain length to the hitch is just a bit too short so an extension would fix this issue. So, then the end without the quick connect attached can a 3/8 quick connect fit in the other end loop. I guess I would be looking for the diameter of the wire used. Thanks

Thanks for letting us help Karen. The Roadmaster 12" Safety Cable Extensions # RM-910648-12 should work well for what you're trying to accomplish. These extensions are commonly used to add length to safety cables in flat towing setups, and the closed loops will easily accommodate a 3/8" quick link. They're constructed from 1/4" vinyl-coated galvanized steel cable and have a combined weight capacity of 8,000 lbs.

Do you think the 12-inch length will give you the additional reach you need? We also offer these extensions in several lengths ranging from 8" to 22", so we can go shorter or longer if needed.

We just completed 100 day trip through Canada and Alaska, and we bought a drop extension for our motorhome so we could tow a Chevy equinox. Because of this we needed a little bit more extension on the safety cables so we bought the extensions. These were 12 inch extensions and they worked great they have been a lifesaver as far as not providing too much tension on the safety cables and they have worked just fine. Hope this helps.

@RickM Happy to hear the # RM-910648-12 worked well for you! Most folks end up needing extensions when they add a high/low adapter. Sounds like quite the trip! One hundred days sounds like a nice vacation.
