Should CURT Shadow 2 Use Vacuum Mode On A Hybrid Vehicle?

Updated 08/17/2026 | Published 08/11/2026

Question:

I have a curt Shadow 2 on my 2025 Ford Escape PHEV and it doesn’t seem to brake well. Because the Escape goes “to sleep” after 10 minutes should I set the system to “vacuum” mode to get additional braking power? Thanks

Hey Tom, thanks for reaching out. No, I would not switch the Shadow 2 # RVI94FR to Vacuum mode just to get more braking power. CURT specifically says most hybrid vehicles use Non-Vacuum/Active-assist brakes, meaning the brake assist is electric or hydraulic rather than relying on stored engine vacuum. The Shadow 2 needs to be set for the actual brake type of the towed vehicle.

If the electric brake assist shuts down while being towed, that can change how much pedal force is needed. Before changing brake type, I recommend verifying that the Escape remains in the proper tow/ignition state and then increasing the Brake Pressure setting on the Shadow 2 if the braking test shows it is too weak. CURT specifically separates Brake Type from Brake Pressure for this reason.
