Dometic PerfectPower Battery Charger GP95QR Has Input Power But No Output

Question:

So I recently had a chance to finally hook up this charger but I have no power coming out of it. I have a between 12-13 volts coming in from my 7-way connector but nothing coming out of the charger. Even the blue LED doesnt light. I tested it using a digital multi-meter. I also set the dip switches to various settings, according to the manual, but still no power coming out. As I understand it, the charger automatically turns on when it senses power coming in to it. Like I said, I am getting power to the charger but nothing coming out of it. Any suggestions?

Hey Mike, thanks for reaching out. If you've got 12-13 volts going into the Dometic # GP95QR charger and the blue LED never comes on, I'd start with the basics. Check the ground first, then verify the input and output fuses with a meter. A blown fuse or poor ground is enough to keep the charger completely dead, including the LED. Also make sure you're checking the input voltage with the truck running, not just with the key on.

If everything checks out and you're seeing 13.8 volts or more at the charger's input with the engine running, the blue LED should light up and the charger should start working. If you've got good power, a good ground, good fuses, and the LED still never comes on, then I'd say the charger itself is the problem. At that point, I'd contact Dometic about a warranty replacement because it sounds like the unit isn't powering up internally.

Jesse, can I assume that the ground is good because when the bare wires coming in are touched with the multimeter probes the voltage reads 13 and change? I have tested it with both just ignition on and also with engine running. When I do that, I am assuming the ground is good. Would that be correct? Also, when you talk about input and output fuses, are you talking about the internal fuses inside of the charger itself?

@Mike Yes, that tells me the ground is probably good since you're getting a stable voltage reading between the positive and ground wires. I still like to verify it with a continuity test, or a voltage drop test under load, but based on what you've described, the ground doesn't sound like the issue. When I mentioned the fuses, I was referring to the external inline fuses on the input/output wiring, not an internal fuse inside the charger. If those fuses are good, you've got 13.8V or more at the input with the engine running, and the blue LED still never comes on, then I think the charger itself has failed internally.

@JesseM Everything checked out so I believe the charger has indeed failed. I have contacted etrailer customer service and they are working on a resolution for me. I'll keep you posted on the return process. Mike
