Do I Consider Tongue Weight or Trailer Weight on a Weight Distribution Hitch?

Question:

I have a question about weight distribution hitch. I have a toy hauler with a max weight of 12000 lbs. The tongue weight is 1450 lbs. So is it better to have a hitch rated for the 12000 or one rated to handle the 1450? Thanks for any help

Hey Jim!

With a 12,000-lb trailer and 1,450 lbs of tongue weight, I’d focus on the tongue weight rating while making sure the system is also rated for at least 12,000 lbs of trailer weight. You don’t want a system that’s underrated for your tongue weight, so I’d look for one rated around 1,500 lbs or higher.
