Which Hitch do I Need for My 2020 BMW X4M, Will the One for the X4 Work?

Updated 08/07/2026 | Published 08/03/2026

Question:

Hello, I’m planning on buying a hitch receiver for a 2020 x4, and I own a 2020 x4m, the hitch receiver said it excludes the x4 m40i, so does that mean it also excludes the x4m?

Hello Jacob,

Welcome to etrailer! I'm glad you found us.

I did some additional checking, and the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C99RV you were looking at is designed to fit the 2020 BMW X4 models, but it will not fit the X4M.

For your 2020 BMW X4M, you need the Stealth Hitches Hidden Rack Receiver # SH47ZR instead. Stealth confirms this hitch is the correct fit for the X4M. One of the things I really like about it is that it's completely hidden when you're not using it. Once installed, the receiver can be removed, leaving your X4M with a clean factory appearance. When you need it for a bike rack or cargo carrier, the receiver installs in just a few moments without any tools.

Installation does require removing the rear fascia so the hitch can be bolted to the vehicle's frame, but no permanent modifications are made to the visible exterior of the vehicle. Once everything is reinstalled, the hitch remains completely hidden until you attach the removable receiver.

One thing to keep in mind is that the receiver included with # SH47ZR is designed for hitch-mounted accessories like bike racks and cargo carriers. If you plan on doing any towing, you'll also need the Towing Kit with Ball Mount and Trailer Wiring for Stealth Hitches Hidden Rack Receiver # 391CONVA7. That kit includes the tow-rated ball mount and trailer wiring needed to safely tow with your X4M.

What do you plan on using the hitch for?

We have a 2023 BMW E3 with a hitch for a mobility scooter. Traveled cross country for 15 days with no issues. I keep it on the car with the carrier on the car. I have never heard any noise, causes no swaying, to my car. I have also towed a bass boat, no issues.

@JacquelynA Thanks for the response Jacquelyn, sounds like you are getting some good use out of your hitch! I will be out on my bass boat at Mark Twain Lake in Missouri hopefully catching some fatties =)
