Best Power Distribution Panel Upgrade for a 1968 Streamline Empress Travel Trailer

Question:

I have a 1968 Streamline Empress travel trailer that I am trying to remodel. This is my first. It has a 30 amp Stab-lok breaker box with no AC to DC converter. I want to replace it with a new 50 amp distribution box, but I don’t know what to buy. I am searching for any advice, or suggestion. The biggest thing that I have to power is a 16k btu Fogatti AC/heat pump at 1270 watts.

Hi Jeffrey, first off, congratulations on the Streamline! Those older trailers are such fun projects. Based on what you've described, I actually wouldn't convert it to 50 amp service. Your 16,000 BTU Fogatti AC with heat pump only draws about 11 amps while running, so a modern 30 amp electrical system is more than enough to handle it. Converting to true 50 amp service is a much bigger project than just replacing the distribution panel. You'd also need a new 50 amp shore power cord, a 50 amp exterior power inlet, and new 6 gauge wiring from the inlet to the breaker panel. For what you're planning, I don't think the extra cost and work would be worth it.

Personally, I'd go with the PowerMax 30A RV Power Center and Distribution Panel part # PM67VR. It replaces your old Stab Lok panel with a modern breaker panel and also adds the AC to DC converter that your trailer is currently missing. The built in 55 amp converter will power your 12 volt lights and accessories while also charging your battery, so it's a nice all in one upgrade.

One thing I did notice is that many trailers from that era used residential electrical components, and from the photos I've seen, the old Stab Lok panels are often larger than modern RV power centers. The PowerMax measures 14-1/8 inches wide, 11-7/8 inches tall, and 8-1/2 inches deep with a required cutout of 12-1/8 inches wide by 11 inches tall. There's a good chance you'll need to make some modifications to the opening to get everything to fit cleanly.

To install the PowerMax PM67VR, you'll need 10 AWG copper wire for the 30 amp AC shore power input, at least 8 AWG copper wire to connect the trailer chassis to the panel's ground bar, and 8 AWG copper wire for the 55 amp converter output to the battery if the battery is mounted nearby. If the battery is more than about 10 to 15 feet away, I'd recommend stepping up to 6 AWG or even 4 AWG to reduce voltage drop. You'll also need the appropriate 120 volt branch circuit breakers and ATC blade fuses for your 12 volt circuits, since those are selected based on the loads you're protecting and are not included with the power center.

What battery is in the Empress? staying lead-acid or moving to lithium?
