Troubleshooting 50 amp Transfer Switch that Requires Manual Switching

Question:
I purchased a PD52 transfer switch thinking mine was bad because I had to manually engage it. When I manually engaged it, I just barely have to push on it and it engages. I have both legs of it with 120v, and My distribution panel CB is good. Do you know what may be wrong?

Hey Tim this is a great question but If the contactor of your # PD52 closes easily with very light manual pressure, the contactor itself is probably not sticking mechanically. Since you've confirmed you have 120V on both legs of the incoming power and your distribution panel breaker is good, the next thing to check is whether the transfer switch coil is receiving the proper control voltage when shore power is applied. Is the contactor coil receiving the correct voltage when shore power is connected? Are all wiring connections tight, especially the neutral and control wiring?

When installing, it is imperative that no mechanical twist or Bend is allowed to affect the contractors. They are electrically and mechanically tied together. Any binding will do exactly what your describing.
