Recommended Brake Assemblies for a Dexter 4,400 lbs Axle

Updated 08/01/2026 | Published 07/29/2026

Question:

Will the components of the Lippert Electric Trailer Braking Assembly for a 4,400 lb. Dexter axle work with a Dexter brake backing plate? I have RV-De-Fender fenders mounted to the current Dexter brake backing plates on my trailer. The fenders would be a pain to remove and reinstall. So I am thinking of keeping the Dexter brake backing plates, removing the brake parts from the new assemblies, and reinstalling the parts on the Dexter backing plates. I need the whole assemblies because the bushings on the top pivot are shot, so would be good to replace the entire assemblies. Or I could just go with the more expensive Dexter brake assemblies. I only want to do this job once.

They will not Bob. The brake assemblies are manufacturer specific so swapping out Lippert parts on Dexter brakes isn't going to work. To do the job right only once, you'll need the Dexter Electric Trailer Brakes item # K23-462-463-00. This are the manually adjusted 4,400 lbs capacity assemblies. They are definitely compatible with your Dexter 4,400 lbs axle and you'll be able to reuse your backing plates.

If you have the self-adjusting brakes, you'll need the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brakes item # K23-478-479.

What kind of trailer do you have and how do you like those RV-De-Fenders? What a great idea. I've never seen those before.

I have a 2021 Grand Design 260RD. I have the Nev-R-Adjust electric trailer brakes, but the self-adjusting parts do not seem to be working. This may be because the bushings on the top pivots have disintegrated. I have been manually adjusting the brakes, which is a bit of a pain because the Nev-R-Adjust arm on two of the assemblies pretty much blocks the view of the adjustment mechanism.

@BobM That does sound like a pain. All the replacement parts for the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brakes item # K23-478-479 are listed below but I don't think these aren't going to help you: Left Hand Replacement Shoe and Lining item # K71-698-00 Right Hand Replacement Shoe and Lining item # K71-699-00 Replacement Trailer Brake Magnet item # BP01-225 Replacement Dexter Adjusting Spring item # 046-139-00
