Best Suspension Enhancement and Weight Distribution for 2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD

Updated 08/03/2026 | Published 07/19/2026

Question:

I have a 22 Tacoma TRD. 3 questions they are related: 1. The rear sagged a bit once I added my topper and gear which stay in/on the truck. Of coarse, sags even more when loading more gear for a trip kayaks, bikes, etc. Id like to bring the rear about 1-1.5 back up for original stance. I was looking at the Hellwig 990s. 2. I also pull an RPOD with a weight distribution hitch. Even with the hitch, the rear s another 1 or so when connected. Would the Timbren bump stops make sense? and can they be used with the helper springs? 3. I have the e2 6000 roundbar stabilizer. I dont like it because it hangs so low, even gets caught in dips on city streets. Id like to swap out for a trunion style...but can I save a few bucks by just getting a replacement head and 2 spring bars for the Equil-i-zer system? Swapping those out vs getting a whole new system. Thank you from a long time customer.

Hey Eric, welcome back ! The best suspension enhancement kit I can recommend for your 2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD would be the Roadactive kit part # RAS4514-SAT. This will give you the additional height from your rear suspension like you are looking for while also has the added benefit of better ride quality loaded and unloaded, and improved handling which will be super helpful since you have a topper that can make the truck feel top heavy. It's really only option that does everything really well while also being adjustable without any drawbacks is why I recommend it so highly.

I do think it's time for a higher rated weight distribution system too. With WD systems you have to count the weight of any cargo in the truck bed that's behind the rear axle as additional tongue weight. So if your 600 lb system doesn't seem like it's doing with with the topper on that's why. That's a lot more additional weight.

So a Fastway Trunnion system like the part # FA92-00-1200 would be best option to give you a higher rated trunnion system that's not going to break the bank. This will be your best option.

Thank you for the thorough answers and suggestions Jameson. I hadn't considered the RAS system. Retaining ride quality is important (I commute 100 miles a day). Another question...I've read that having a WD hitch with a tongue weight rating that is too high can also cause issues (including frame damage). This doesn't seem like that big of a jump (at 800 lbs). What is considered "too" high? I see the hitch is on sale (for how long?)...any chance the RAS system is coming up on sale too? Together it's bit of a bill... Thanks! Eric

@EricD The biggest thing we are aware of with a system that is rated too high is that the ride quality will be harsh as the system won't flex at all basically. The kit I recommended is actually a 1,200 lb tongue weight kit. Too high is when the loaded tongue weight is under the minimum tongue weight range of the system so in this case that would be 600.

I pull a Flagstaff ePro, about 13ft. First added a Hellwig anti-sway bar which helped with the mild lateral roll sensation I was feeling. Wanted some extra support to level out when towing the camper and debated an extra leaf, air support, and found the RAS and decided to go with that for 1) ease of installation and adjustability 2) portability if needed 3) easily removed accessory. The units went on easily and I towed the camper (without a weight distribution hitch) from Michigan to New York Adirondacks and back without a 'hitch'. The load was stable and level on both highway and two lane roads, traveling up to 70mph. For me, it was a good investment and suits my needs. No regrets. Everyday ride in the 2022 TRD Off Road is as good or better than it was before installation of RAS.
