Question:
We are looking to replace our lead flooded batteries with lithium batteries and would like to keep as much current inventory as possible. We have 6-100 watt and 4-200 watt solar panels. What would be the best solar charge controller you would recommend that would be possible to expand or add on panels later if needed. Thank you so much for your help. Mike

Hi Mike, that's a great question, and it's smart to think about future expansion while you're upgrading to lithium. Assuming you're staying with a 12 volt battery system, which is what most RV owners do, I'd go with the Victron SmartSolar 150/100-Tr MPPT Solar Charge Controller, Part # VN34ZR. With your current 1,400 watts of solar, the extra capacity gives you room to grow without having to replace the controller later.
I noticed you were looking at the Victron BlueSolar 150/60 part # VN74RR. It's a great controller, but I don't think it's the best fit for your setup. On a 12 volt system, a 60 amp controller isn't large enough to take full advantage of your existing solar panels, so you'd end up leaving some solar power on the table. The SmartSolar 150/100 is better matched to your current system, and it has built in Bluetooth, so you can monitor and adjust everything right from your phone without buying any extra accessories. If you decide to add even more solar down the road, it's also much easier to expand with the Victron SmartSolar 150/100-Tr MPPT Solar Charge Controller, Part # VN34ZR.
Just to be sure we're sizing everything correctly, are you planning to keep your RV on a 12 volt battery system, or are you moving to a 24 volt setup? Also, what do you hope to power most when you're off the grid?
