Recommended Replacement for a Pentair Shurflo Revolution 4008 Series By-Pass Pump

Question:
We had a Shur-Flo Potable Water Pump which died on us in March 2025. We replaced it with a Pentair Shurflo 4008 RV Revolution By-Pass Pump which died and installed March 2025. It now has produced a metallic smell as well as an oily residue in the water. There is not an anode rod in our water heater. What pump can you recommend to us for a replacement. I would not like to replace this pump every year as the first one lasted for 5 years at a minimum. Please advise

Hey Pam, welcome back! To replace your Pentair Shurflo Revolution 4008 Series By-Pass Pump, I recommend the Seaflo Diaphragm Pump for Boats and RVs item # SE57FR. This is a 12v powered three gallon per minute pump that is rated up to 55 psi. It works with up to four fixtures at once and has the same 1/2"-14 MNPT port sizes so it'll be an easy swap out.
The Seaflo Diaphragm Pump item # SE57FR is a variable flow pump that's going to last longer because the motor isn't constantly turning on and off. The bypass valves cut out the rapid cycling which causes pumps to burn out. It comes with a rubber mounting base that significantly reduces vibration noise. It runs extremely quiet at around 60 dB and measures only 8" long x 4-15/16" wide x 4-3/8" tall.
I highly recommend flushing out your lines when you replace your pump. For every 15 gallons of water your tank holds you'll want to mix in a 1/4" cup of bleach and leave all the faucets on.

What I like about the Seaflo variable flow pump is that the water doesn't surge fast and then slow under half-faucet flow rates like the older technology pumps. Slow and steady or fast and steady.

I replaced a sure flow pump with this seaflo pump about 3 or 4 years ago. When both pumps got too loud, (both still pumped water), I replaced them with this pump, the first pump was almost silent, this new pump is a little louder at the beginning, ( but tolerable). I did add an accumulator tank also, which helped the water flow. I do recommend this pump!

We replaced our pump with same pump works well. I do not see how the pump could contaminate the water unless it was in the pump housing already. If the pump motor was leaking oil through a bearing, if it should not get in the pump housing already and it would be leaking water it could get in the pump i think. Are you sure you did not contaminate your hose end hooking up. Its pretty hard not to drao the hose ends around. If cleaning the system does not help i would get the pump replaced. Our rockwood has a whole house type filter installed whis is a good option, except the element is teal costly. The one you buy at Home Depot or Lowes would be a cheaper option for elements. Instal it with a bypass like the water heater has. We has has lots of water at campgrounds that are strange but having that filter along with the small inline filter make for good drinking water especially when using the tank.

We typically use campground water outlets. If we are going to boondock (between campgrounds) we typically fill up prior to leaving the campground the day before leaving. How long is the warranty? How often do we need to flush the lines? It comes with a strainer? How often do we need to clean the strainer? We never had to do extra flushing with the original Shur-Flo. Thank you for your help Pam
