Cross Compatibility between Inverter Remote Communication Cables

Updated 07/14/2026 | Published 07/12/2026

Question:

Will the communications cable for a Progressive Dynamics PD1620a remote control panel work with the Rich Solar remote panel? My PD1620a recently died with an E5 error and I am replacing it with the Rich Solar Nova 3000 watt inverter. I had the remote panel installed for the PD1620a and was hoping I could use the existing communication cable for it with the Rich Solar remote without having to install the Rich Solar communication cable.

Hey Doug,

Thanks for your question!

Unfortunately, there's no good way to confirm whether the existing communication cable from your Progressive Dynamics remote # PD64FR will work with the Rich Solar remote # RS79VR.

While both remotes use RJ12-style connectors, that only tells us the physical plug is the same. There's no guarantee the wiring (pinout) is the same between the two manufacturers, so the cables may not be compatible.

In fact, the installation instructions for # PD64FR specifically state that only the communication cable supplied by Progressive Dynamics should be used when connecting the remote.

I'm guessing your existing communication cable is routed through the walls or ceiling, making it difficult to replace. If that's the case, one trick that often works well is to securely tape or attach the new Rich Solar cable to the end of the existing cable before pulling the old cable out. That way, the old cable acts as a pull wire and helps fish the new cable through the same route.

How are you typically using your inverter in your setup?
