Replacing Tires on a 1969 Triple E Compact Trailer

Updated 07/14/2026 | Published 07/09/2026

Question:

I have a 1969 triple E Compact trailer. So original recommended sizes of tires is a 13 but because the suspension is shot it’s hard to change the tires. They don’t fit in the wheel well not easily. What tire size do you recommend? It’s about 1100 pounds.

Hi Renee,

Thanks for your question!

I wouldn't recommend downsizing your tires just to work around a worn suspension. While a smaller tire might make them easier to remove, it's really only a temporary solution. It also reduces your ground clearance and could create additional issues down the road. Also, depending on how much smaller you need to go to make removal easier, you will end up with tires that are under capacity for your camper.

I'd recommend sticking with a tire that's the same size as what the trailer originally came with. If you can let me know the size that's currently on the trailer (for example, ST175/80R13 or ST185/80R13), I'd be happy to recommend some replacement options. If you're looking for new wheels as well, I'll just need to know your wheel bolt pattern and what style of wheel you're after. If you're not sure of the bolt pattern, I can help you figure that out.

The best long-term solution is to replace the worn suspension components so the tires fit and function the way they're supposed to. If you'd like to go that route, let me know what type of suspension your trailer has, and I'd be happy to help you identify the parts you'll need.

How long have you had your 1969 Triple E Compact?
