Can Softstart be Used with Surge Protector on RV

Updated 07/06/2026 | Published 06/30/2026

Question:

We already have a Progressive Industries surge protector and would like to add a soft start. Can we use this plug in one with our surge protector?

Hey Mike, yes you can definitely use the SoftStart part # AS44FR with a surge protector. You would want to plug the surge protector in the power source first and then plug the Softstart into the surge protector. This order ensures that the surge protector handles any initial power spikes before the soft start manages the inrush current from the appliance, offering protection against both mechanical start-up stress and electrical surges. What AC unit do you have?

@JamesonC I'm trying to decide between the Plug-In Soft Start and the wired version.....is there an advantage to one over the other, except for ease of installation. I'm not climbing on the roof, but our son recently installed the wired version on his trailer and said he'd be glad to help with ours. I know the Plug-in is a little more expensive, but not too much. All things being equal, is one model really a better choice for us? Thanks Mike

@Mike Wired is better as it does more to offset the initial startup amp draw by staggering the activation of the different components inside the AC unit. So if you can get help to install it I would recommend the part # AS64FR.
