Towing Capacity of a 2004 GMC Sierra 2500

Updated 06/28/2026 | Published 06/27/2026

Question:

Have a 2004 GMC 2500, short bed, 4wd, crew cab, lb7. Unlike the 2005 lly, my book does not give the fifth wheel towing capacity. Only towing from the rear 12000lbs. Looking to see what I can truly tow with my 04. GCWR=22,000lbs. Pin weight=2500lbs. GVWR=9200lbs. Cargo weight rating=1713lbs. Have interest in a grand design weighing roughly 10,800empty, Hitch weight is 1900.

Welcome back Jen. From what I could find online, the 5th wheel towing capacity for a 2004 GMC Sierra 2500 depends on its engine and trim. The 6.0L V8 gas model maxes out at 10,000 to 10,300 lbs, while the 6.6L Duramax Diesel handles 12,000 to 16,700 lbs depending on the axle ratio and cab configuration.

For a more accurate answer you can check your towing capacity using your VIN but if you have a diesel engine you should be good.

Lb7=6.6 model with a vin #1 (duramax diesel since I have to specify exactly). And crew cab which I also mentioned. They only made 1 gear ratio with this model 3.73…. I also searched online which is inconclusive because every other site gives different information. Do you have a specific way to look this information up using the vin?

@Jen https://vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov/decoder/ I just use a VIN decoder. You can also contact your local GM dealership and have them run the VIN.
