Question:

Have a concern. When the package arrived, I realized your company included a 40 amp fuse. My research shows that on a Toyota Sienna hybrid the charging system for the battery is different than a standard engine with an alternator. Hybrid supplies less current - 20 Amps - to charge the hybrid starter battery. My RV has an AC to DC controller but not a DC to DC controller no solar so if the RV battery gets drained that the RV could attempt to pull 30 to 40 Amp from the Sienna and damage the Siennas. Is this correct? I plan to add solar and a DC to DC controller in the future but for now would like to run it In the current configuration if possible. Suggestions? I ordered C53VV, ETBC7L and C57202

Hello Jay,

That's a great question, and I can definitely understand why you'd want to check before hooking everything up.

The good news is that the 40 amp fuse included with the # ETBC7L doesn't mean your Sienna will be sending 40 amps to the trailer all the time. The fuse is simply there to protect the wiring if there's ever a short or overload. The amount of current the trailer battery actually draws depends on its state of charge and the wiring between the vehicle and the trailer.

Since your RV battery is currently a standard lead acid battery and you plan to add a DC-to-DC charger later, I would be comfortable using the setup as it is for now. The 12 volt charge line is really intended to help maintain the trailer battery while you're driving, not recharge a heavily discharged battery.

When you're ready to add a DC-to-DC charger, I recommend the Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger # RED96FR. It provides a controlled charge to your trailer battery and is a great choice for hybrid tow vehicles since it manages the charging current instead of relying on the standard 7-way charge line alone. What kind of camper are you towing with your Sienna? I want to make sure you got this wiring for towing and not flat towing, if it is for flat towing, you will need different wiring.

I used this setup on my 2025 ford maverick. The maverick has a direct power pigtail that runs a 110 ac outlet in the lariat model. I utilize that pigtail on my setup. I would check what your camper’s inverter output is. It will tell you what amperage you can be expecting.
