Are Benton Cargo Carrier Tray and Modular Rack Available Without Shank

Updated 07/03/2026 | Published 06/23/2026

Question:

Can I purchase a Benton modular carrier and the cargo tray from the Benton cargo carrier separately to have the functionality of both using the same base? Thank you.

Hi Herb; it sounds like you're asking if you could Benton Basic Hitch Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitch # B42FR or Benton MoveHitch 60x24 Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches # B86VR without the shank to move them back and forth. Unfortunately, we don't offer those parts separately at this time. They are only available as the complete system for each one.

What will you be using them for?

Hi Robin, I would like to be able to carry bikes, skis, cargo boxes, generator, mulch, etc. Pretty much anything within the load capability of the rack understanding that I need consider the load distribution and distance behind the hitch receiver. Are the base steel hitch and hinged structures of the 2 Benton racks identical, or is the steel base of the new cargo carrier made stronger to accommodate the 500 lb load rating? Also, what are the nearest and farthest edge dimensions of the carrier basket relative to the hitch pin hole when down and when folded?

@HerbV it sounds like they were originally the same but some changes were made over so they aren't quite identical. I believe the difference in capacity is a matter of what the basket is capable of vs the crossbars. I'm waiting to hear back on those measurements, if nothing else I'll go measure it for you when I'm there tomorrow.

@HerbV 7-1/2" from hitch pin hole to closest part when folded. 19" from hitch pin hole to closest edge when it is down to carry and 43" to the outside edge.
