Replaced Falcon 2 Tow Bar Arms And They Are No Longer Self-Supporting And Fall To The Ground

Question:

I recently purchased 910021-80, the replacement passenger side inner/outer arm for the Roadmaster Falcon 2 tow bar. My son did the replacement but the tow arms are no long self-supporting and right to the ground when the storage latch is released and the tow bar is rotated down in order to to hitch up. Can you give any insight as to why this might happen?

Hey Diane, thanks for reaching out. The most likely cause of this is that something changed in the internal spring and tension assembly during the arm replacement.

On a Falcon 2, the tow bar arms don't just hang freely. There is spring tension inside the arm assemblies that helps support the arms and control their movement when the tow bar is folded down. If the new arm was assembled incorrectly, a spring was omitted, installed backward, or not preloaded correctly during reassembly, the arms can lose that self-supporting characteristic and simply flop to the ground when the storage latch is released.

Another possibility is that a pivot bolt was overtightened or under tightened during reassembly, but since the issue appeared immediately after replacing the arm, I'd be looking first at the internal components of the replacement arm and comparing it to the original side.

Do both arms fall to the ground now? Or just the side that was replaced?
