Will The 306-X7900 Front Hitch Interfere With The Diesel Cooler On A 2011 Ram 3500?

Updated 06/10/2026 | Published 06/02/2026

Question:

Looking at 306-X7900 front hitch for 2011 Ram 3500 DRW 4WD with 6.7 Cummins. In comments section a person commented about diesel cooler interference. The cooler is recessed relative to the frame so i dont see a problem. 2nd, a spacer or washers under the 8 attaching bolts will provide more clearance. Lastly, the front hitch cross bar could reduce airflow to the cooler. What do you say to my comments?

Hey Greg, thanks for reaching out. I think you're looking at it the right way. On the 2011 Ram 3500 diesel trucks, the cooler does sit recessed behind the front structure, which is why many owners install the # 306-X7900 without any cooling issues. The concern comes from the fact that tolerances can vary slightly from truck to truck, and some owners have reported tighter clearances than others.

As for adding washers or spacers under the hitch mounting points, that's not something I'd recommend. The hitch was engineered and tested to mount directly to the frame and spacing it away from the frame changes the load path and could affect the hitch's rated performance. If clearance is truly an issue, I'd rather address the cooler mounting or verify fitment than modify how the hitch attaches to the truck. It's always best to use the included hardware and ONLY the included hardware.

On the airflow question, the hitch cross tube will inevitably sit in front of some portion of the cooling stack, but in practice it occupies a relatively small area compared to the overall radiator and intercooler opening. If front hitches routinely caused cooling problems on these trucks, we'd see widespread reports of overheating, and that really hasn't been the case. For normal towing and driving, I wouldn't expect the cross tube to have a meaningful impact on cooling performance. The bigger question is simply making sure you have adequate physical clearance between the hitch and the cooler during installation.

What will you be using the front hitch for?

I’ll be carrying a 70 lb bike rack and 145 lb of ebikes.

@GregU Nice! It's rated for 750 lbs of tongue weight so that'll be no problem at all!

Hey Greg. I installed this hitch on my 2018 Ram with the Cummins a little over a year ago. W pulled a 8000 lb camper out west with it and never had an issue with any overheating. We were in Texas, Arizona, Utah, Idaho with temps in the upper 90's. Never had an issue.

@Pete Nice! Sounds like you really put the hitch to the test! Glad to hear it didn't cause you any airflow issues either. Thanks for sharing!

I installed this front hitch on my 2016 Ram 2500 Cummins 4WD over a year ago. Like you, I had noticed that it fills the opening for direct air flow to the transmission cooler. I was able to install without removing the front bumper. It wasn't easy, but trying to use washers as spacers would make the installation even more difficult, and I don't think it would help air flow. I made an assumption that circulation from air flow below the bumper combined with the air around the cross tube would provide sufficient cooling. I have transmission temperature available in my dash instrumentation, so I have checked transmission temperature on 600 mile trips pulling a 14,500 lb fifth wheel RV after installing the front hitch, and I haven't recognized any increase in trans temperature.

@JohnS Thanks for sharing that, John. I really appreciate the detailed feedback, especially regarding the transmission cooler concerns. It's great to hear you've put over a year of use on the hitch, including long trips towing a 14,500 lb fifth wheel, and haven't seen any increase in transmission temperatures. That's exactly the kind of real-world experience that helps other Cummins owners feel more confident about the installation. Your point about avoiding washers as spacers is helpful too. It's always nice when someone can report back after actually monitoring temperatures instead of just speculating on airflow. Thanks again for taking the time to share your results.

Works great. Fits great. Fairly easy install. No cooling issues. Would not recommend adding spacers as that will reduce the strength.

@Howard Thanks for sharing that, Howard. It's great to hear the hitch has been working well for you and that you haven't experienced any cooling issues after the installation. I also appreciate you pointing out the spacer concern, that's a good observation since the hitch is designed to mount directly to the frame and adding spacers can affect how the load is distributed.

I had to install a 3" drop because with a smaller motorcycle, (Yamaha xt250) the rack positioned high enough that it blocked my forward visibility somewhat. With ebikes you should probably be fine, be aware that the rack mounts farily high on the Ram 3500.

@Donald Ah yea that makes sense. Thanks for the tip!
