Does WFCO Auto Detect RV Converter # WF96FR Have Backfeed Protection

Updated 06/01/2026 | Published 05/26/2026

Question:

Does WFCO WF96FR have DC-DC charger functionality to prevent lithium batteries from trying to charge the tow vehicle battery since the resting voltage of the lithium battery is higher and may cause the cars alternator to turn off in newer vehicles? I have an issue where a new lithium battery in my camper with the existing WFCO WF-8735P is discharging while driving, apparently because its trying to charge the tow vehicle through the 7pin connector instead of being charged by the tow vehicle.

Hey Justin, I did some checking and yes the WFCO Auto Detect RV Converter and AC/DC Distribution Panel # WF96FR does have backfeed protection like you are asking about. This will not attempt to charge your tow vehicle battery when connected like your old setup. What lithium batteries did you go with?

I just checked with WFCO and they said that their product will NOT prevent the issue of the RV battery trying to power the tow vehicle. Per WFCO tech support's email: "You would want to install a DC to DC charger to solve your problem. And the short answer is no, the converter doesn't have anything to do with that connection (to the tow vehicle); nor does it function while you are driving down the road. The converter only works when plugged into a 110/120v AC source."

@JustinK Sorry about that! I misunderstood your question. How high amperage of a charger do you think you'd want? We have a 12 amp like with the part # RED96FR or would you want something rated higher?
