Moving The Jack To The Side Of Trailer Frame For Tailgate Clearance

Published 05/18/2026

Question:

I tow a small enclosed trailer with my Silverado, and the tailgate hits the tongue jack when I’m hooked up. I’d like to move the jack to the side if possible, but I still want to use a drill. What should I be looking at?

Hey Justin! I’d look at the etrailer Sidewind Trailer Jack - Swivel Bolt - 2K # e35YV for that.

It mounts to the trailer frame instead of staying in the center A-frame jack location, and it fits trailer frames 2" to 4" tall; it should fit since that is a nice universal range, but I do recommend measuring your trailer frame height just to be sure! Once installed, it can swivel up along the frame for travel, which helps with both tailgate clearance and ground clearance.

It also includes the 3/4" socket for drill operation, so you can use a cordless drill if you don't want to manually crank. What kind of trailer and cargo do you have on the back?
