This is a great question, John.
Since your Colorado doesn’t have the factory tow package and you’re working with the bare wires, the cleanest way to finish things out at the back of the truck would be to use the Pigtail Wiring Harness # PK11998 along with the Pollak Dual Connection Socket with Bracket # PK23AV.
You’ll wire the pigtail into your truck’s existing wires first, and then the Pollak socket simply plugs right into that pigtail. That makes the install a lot cleaner and gives you both a 4-flat and 7-way connection at the back.
It’s a really nice setup because once it’s installed, everything is contained in that socket and ready to go whenever you hook up a trailer.
Are you going to be towing a smaller trailer with no brakes or towing one with brakes?
