Is There A Way To Lock The Ramp Gate Shut On A 18' Dive Tail Utility Trailer?

Published 04/15/2026

Question:

Hi I have a 18ft dive tail utility trailer. It has a mesh gate ramp, Do you sell a lock for this? Not to hold it up, but you actually lock it, to keep thieves from ping the gate

Hey Allen, thanks for reaching out, and good question. We don't sell a lock specifically for this, since those trailers really don't have a built-in location for a lock, but there are a few potential ways to lock the gate shut.

The first thing that comes to mind would be to run a padlock thru the latch. If the latch has a pre-drilled hole you could shut the ramp, then add padlocks to the end of the latch to stop it from opening. Or if the latch has no holes, you could drill your own.

Another thing that comes to mind is to run a cable lock or chain thru the gate and thru the side rail or tie-down point on the trailer. A cable lock for a bike like part # Y07238 would work well for that since it would easily fit thru the mesh gate, or you could do a chain and padlock. A nice heavy-duty chain and padlock is probably what I would lean towards. It would be a strong and flexible setup.

Aside from that, the only other thing I could think of would be to weld on some locking tabs you can run a padlock thru. That would be nice and permanent but a bit more work to get set up.

What do you usually haul on your trailer?

@AllenD Glad to help! Just make sure you get a chain that fits thru the gate mesh and yes I think that will be your best bet. You know where to find me if you need anything else!
