Can 2022 Chevy Silverado 3500HD Control Incandescent Taillights of Camper

Updated 03/24/2026 | Published 03/21/2026

Question:

I have a 2022 Silverado 3500HD LTZ that I’m setting up to put a 1996 BigFoot truck camper on. The camper has the same 7-way plug as the pickup. My question is the running lights on the camper. It has incandescent lights so I assume I will need to swap to LED. What are the lighting issues I may run into mating the pickup with the BigFoot? I’ve read of hyper-flashing what causes this? any other potential issues? Thank you, Mark

Hey Mark, if you are worried that your 2022 Silverado 3500HD won't be able to activate camper taillights that are LED that won't be a problem. While your taillights are LED and that signal is used to tell the trailer wiring when to come on the actual circuit is powered from the battery and not the LED taillights so you won't have any issues.

Now with that said...if you wanted to swap to LED taillights on the camper you would not have to worry about hyperflashing or anything at all. That type of issue is only if you swap the vehicle taillights to LED from incandescent. Does that clear everything up?

Jameson, thank you yes, your answer cleared that up for me. A follow up question. Currently the camper has an 1156 bulb (reverse lights) and 2057 (double filament bulbs) for tail lights. I assume the 2057 is for my turn/brake/running lights. When I had this camper on my 2006 Chevy Silverado the turn/brake/running lights operated as they should. Will they operate as they should when the camper is plugged in to my 2022 Chevy Silverado?

@MarkA Yes they will work just fine with both vehicles. Your camper taillights will essentially operate like trailer lights and while they use the vehicle taillights as signal circuits they don't just draw straight from those same circuits.
