Furrion Chill Cube Weak Airflow Through RV Duct Vents Troubleshooting

Question:

I had the Chill Cube AC in my RV. This is the second one installed as the first one wouldnt cool the RV. This one has the same issue. I have to set the follow me temp at 65 degrees just to get close to 71. Im a ducted system. Almost NO air comes out of my duct vents. I only have 4 vents. I went from a 13500 btu to the 18000 btu. My old noisy unit did such a better job of cooling. Im at the point where I want to replace the unit with a different company unless you have some suggestions on how to get air to come out of my vents. I feel air coming out of the sunroof area in my shower. Please help with any suggestions you might have. Thanks... Tom

Hi Tom, I completely understand why you’re frustrated, especially after going through two units and even upgrading to the 18,000 BTU model.

One thing I wanted to share that sometimes gets overlooked with the Chill Cube ducted setups is the air shutter inside the ceiling assembly. I attached a reference image that explains it. There is a small sliding tab on the grille that controls whether the air is sent into the ducts or dumped straight into the room below the AC. When the tab is pushed to the right, it closes the opening and pressurizes the duct system, which is the correct position for normal ducted operation. When the tab is pushed to the left, it opens the grille and dumps most of the cold air directly into the room instead of the ducts.

If that shutter is open even a little, most of the air will take the easy path out of the unit instead of traveling through the ductwork, which can make it feel like almost nothing is coming out of the ceiling vents. I would double check that the tab is fully set to the ducted position to pressurize the ducts.

Since you also mentioned feeling air coming out around the shower skylight, that can sometimes mean the plenum area above the ceiling assembly is leaking air into the roof cavity instead of pushing it through the ducts. Making sure the divider and duct openings are sealed well inside that assembly can make a big difference in airflow.

I found a recent iRV2 thread specifically about the Furrion Chill Cube 18K where owners were discussing ducted-install compatibility and airflow concerns with existing RV duct assemblies. In that thread, one commenter with HVAC experience said the 18K unit can run into performance issues when paired with ductwork that was originally designed around smaller units so you are not alone.
