How Much Does the Swagman Swivel Hitch Extender S86SR Impact the Tongue Weight?

Updated 03/12/2026 | Published 03/07/2026

Question:

How does this impact tongue weight? Hoping to install on a Toyota Sienna with Carpod carrier. A bit worried about overall tongue weight. Will just be carrying luggage and household items, but the combined weight of the carpod and swing arm would be 100 lbs alone. Thoughts? I do have Firestone air bags installed to reduce sag.

Hey Chris! The Swagman Swivel Hitch Extender item # S86SR is going to reduce your hitch's tongue weight capacity by 50%. This is a common reduction amongst all swing away devices. This is due to the extended length your Carpod Walled Cargo Carrier item # M2205-2201 is mounted past the item # S86SR and the additional leverage. The Swagman item # S86SR also adds 47 lbs to your tongue weight.

What year is your Sienna or what model number is your EcoHitch? If you can put this information below where it says Add Comment, I'll be able to tell you exactly what your tongue weight capacity is going to be reduced to.

This hitch is a game changer: e-bike rack, cargo platform, tray: they all get out of the way now when i need them to. If you can handle the weight I highly recommend this product.

Dan's comment is spot on. The only downside for me is that the hitch is extremely heavy which makes installing it and removing a challenge for this 70 yo.

@GaryS Thanks for taking the time to leave that feedback Gary! The Yakima Backswing item # Y02483 weighs only 34 lbs if you're interested in a lighter option.

I shipped all over to find a hitch extender that would allow me to open the rear door of our Winnebago ERA without taking the bikes off the rack. I even tried two brands and shipped them back after seeing how flimsy the rack was with the extension. The swagman unit is a beast! It worked perfectly with my swagman e-bike rack. I am sure it reduced the tongue weight I carry, but the ERA tongue weight is 500 lbs and even at 50% reduction, my racks and bikes still don’t exceed the max. I also did not detect any sag in the bike rack. I did but the etrailer anti-rattle device. It works well and adds a little peace of mind.
