Small Trailer Recommendation for Carrying Up to 3 Kayaks and Canoe

Updated 02/12/2026 | Published 02/10/2026

Question:

Hello, I am looking for an economical and flexible kayak/canoe trailer that will accommodate a mix of current and future boat arrangements. At times I may tow with my RAV4 so weight is a consideration. Right now I need a trailer for one 16 foot canoe and a 14 ft kayak. I may update my boats in the near future, replacing the canoe with a shorter fishing kayak. Any I may want the option of bringing 3 kayaks without the canoe. Do you have any recommendations?

Hey Douglas, the Malone EcoLight part # MAL63FR would be a great choice. It is setup to carry up to 4 kayaks but the foam block style carriers could be adapted to carry a canoe as well. This is also very lightweight at only 145 lbs so your RAV4 would easily handle it.

Or if you prefer J-style kayak carriers we have the Microsport part # MPG462G2. How often are you out on the water?

Thank you for the quick reply. I've recently retired, so I hope to be out on the water regularly once it warms up a bit. They trailer looks like an interesting option. I did see in the description something about being for canoes/kayaks up to 14 feet, but my canoe is 16. Would it still fit this trailer?

@DouglasM You're right the Ecolight does have a shorter boat length restriction. The MicroSport I mentioned though can carry boats up to 20 feet and tires are rated a little higher at 70 mph.

@JamesonC Jamison - I had a thought this morning regarding options to use the Ecolight trailer. Do you know if Malone has a tounge extender option for the Ecolight?

@Douglasm The Malone extender won't work with the Ecolight but we do have a solution that Malone has told us in the past would work. You could use the fold-away hinge part # FHDPB230101 to add some length to the tongue of the trailer tongue. You would have to source additional channel to make the tongue longer.
