Question:
We have a 1993 Newmar mountain air 31ft fifth wheel camper with 8 bolt axles. I would like to install the disc brake system from you. You have a few different systems to choose from. Can you help me decide? Thank you Kurt

Hey Kurt! What kind of brakes do you have now? What is your axle capacity? I'm assuming you have electric right now, so a full kit like the Hydrastar Disc Brake Kit w/ Actuator for Tandem Axle Trailers - 13" Hub/Rotor - 8 on 6-1/2 - 7K # HSE7K-T1 is going to be the best option. However, you want to confirm your axle capacity so you're getting brakes with the appropriate rating.

Kurt, I install this system on my 2019 40' Montana 5th wheel and it made the difference of night and day on stopping. It was very easy to run the lines to hook up the disc brakes. I ran my line from my actuator which I put in my front cabinet compartment to keep it element free. I drilled a hole through the metal to run the brake lines and made the hole big enough to put a piece of garden hose in the hole so my brake line went through the hose to prevent any vibration with the brake line and the metal hole. I have a 2016 F350 6.7 dually and I can hit my brake controller and it will stop my 5th wheel and truck without hitting the brake pedal. My electric brake system wouldn't do that.

Happy with the results for my 2018 Montana 3121 pulled by a 2017 Ford F350. I've taken one 800-mile trip and can say they are a big upgrade. Had to make one stop that not sure I could have made with the old brakes. I did have to purchase longer bolts to mount the caliper mounting bracket (Hydrastar sells a kit for this). The new bracket is thicker than the existing brake backing plate. Only about half of the nut threads were engaged using the existing bolts. This may have been ok (one of the installation videos mentions this and states that it is ok) but I replaced them. Hardest part of the install was running the metal brake lines. I mounted the actuator in the front compartment next to the batteries.

I have a Solitude 310 I pull with a Chevrolet 3500, the installation is pretty straight-forward, and they work awesome. Stopping power is much much geater than the standard drum brakes. On my year of GM (2024) you need to install a diode for it to work properly, it can work part time without it but will turn off on its own. I also installed the Roadmaster Comfort ride suspension system at the same time and it is also a big improvement over the MorRyde 3000 suspension that was on mine

The Hydrastar system was fairly easy to install. I looked at several different ones but chose this one for the reviews . The lady at e trailer said this was the best option. I am a mechanic so it was not too big of a job to install. I did a few upgrades and it took a little more time than I wanted. The controller is easy to install and wire in. Comes with good directions.

Yes, Robin I do have the 7000lbs axles with electric breaks. I pull with a 2012 Ram 2500 with 6.7 Cummins. Will I need the extra device to go along with the actuator that works with my truck/trailer actuator? I only have the stock system for trailer breaks on my truck. Thanks Kurt
