Will Softride Shuttle Pad Tailgate Pad Protect Tailgate When Down Using In-Bed Camper

Updated 01/19/2026 | Published 01/18/2026

Question:

I need a tailgate cover that will cover my tailgate while I have it down when my truck bed camper is installed. Would like something that covers tailgate to protect from road debris. Will this work or do you have another? I have F150 Lightning

Hey David! That isn't the main purpose of the Softride Shuttle Pad Tailgate Pad # SR26457 but it will protect your tailgate while it is down. Keep in mind, you probably won't get 100% coverage, particularly on the sides. This is 61" wide so I would compare that to your tailgate to see if it works for you. The only one that is wider is the Yakima # Y38AR at 62" but it is shorter so you will have less protection overall.

What kind of camper do you have?

I have a Wayfinder Go Lite. It’s a few inches longer than bed so tailgate has to be down. I think some protection is better than none. It won’t blow off while driving, right? A neat product idea would be one that protects the tailgate outside while creating a front door mat feel on inner side so you can wipe feet… also, it would be best if the tailgate stairs can still pop out. Maybe I need to make it myself.

@David that is correct, the # SR26457 won't blow off while driving. I'm sure you would have to make something like that yourself. A lot of people just remove their tailgate if they're worried about it getting damaged while down with a camper so I don't think there is enough of a market for it, but I could be wrong.

@RobinH Yes, unfortunately my camper has 3 bars that put weight on truck and one is right on tailgate so seems to be needed in this case.

@David ah yeah, probably because the Lightning only has the short bed so that makes sense.
