Correct Blue Ox SwayPro for Trailer with 1,330 lb Dry Tongue Weight

Updated 01/25/2026 | Published 01/16/2026

Question:

I bought an RV with a blue ox 15K weight distribution system. The dry tong weight is 1,330 lbs. The dry weight is $10K. The WD Hitch says it is for a tong weight of 1500lbs. It has a 2inch shaft when I asked for a 2.5inch they added ad adaptor. Should I be concerned with the extra weight that I am adding having already gas tanks and a battery in the front of the trailer? I read that on this systems bigger is not better, but I have gotten a Blue OX 20K?

Hey Edwin! If the listed dry tongue weight is 1,330 lbs you will likely be over the rating of your current SwayPro spring bars. You'll probably be adding 150-200 lbs with the propane and batteries, but that does depend on the number of propane tanks and the size of the batteries. Add in whatever you store in the front pass through, inside the trailer toward the font, anything you're carrying behind the rear axle on your tow vehicle, and you can easily exceed 1,500 lbs.

Since you already have the SwayPro I would start by measuring the tongue weight. You can use a scale like the Big Truck Big RV Tongue Weight Scale # BTBRV27FR or for an exact readout the B&W Digital Tongue Weight Scale # BW34KR. If you have the trailer fully loaded, and find you're still under 1,500 lbs (or just a hair over) you will be fine.

If you're over by several hundred lbs I would see if the dealer will let you switch to the higher rated system, or you can swap out the bars with the # BXW4014. These are the newer style bars so make sure they attach with the pins like the picture below. If they gave you the older style system and bars you may have a hard time finding a replacement, I know we don't have them anymore.

It is acceptable to use an adapter, assuming it is a reducer sleeve like the # BTBRV64FR. If you would rather not use one you can also swap out the shank for the # BXW4028 which is designed to fit a 2-1/2" receiver.

What kind of trailer did you get?

It is a Jayco Eagle 312 BHOK model. It does have two gas tanks and one battery in the front. The bars seems to attach with similar pins. The sleeve they install is shorter I will check how deep it goes into the hitch tomorrow. I might decide to go to a scale. Would prefer not to buy one to used just once or twice. The arms might be the way to go. Thank you!

@EdwinS so that will be around 70 lbs of propane plus the weight of the battery (looks like a group 31 AGM so 60 lbs minimum). You're pretty close so depending on how you load it you might be fine with the system as is. Heading to a scale is a good idea if you wouldn't have any other use for one after this initial check.

@RobinH Weighted the RV. The tong weight was 1520 lbs. That is without loading much in to it. I am ordering the replacement bars. Thank you.

I pull trailers professionally and used hitches that were to small for years. I stepped up to the Blue OX there is no other hitch out there that compares. Put 120000 miles on last year and half of them were bumper pull best hitch for weight and weight distribution but the biggest thing for me is how much they help you in the wind. Will recommend this hitch don’t waste your money on all the cheaper hitches you will not regret it and your truck and trailer will love this hitch.
