Does Gen-Y Nomad 5th Wheel To Gooseneck Pin Box Require Safety Chains ?

Published 12/03/2025

Question:

I know 5th wheels normally don’t use chains. Since the Nomad replaces my lippert rhino pin box, do I still have to run safety chains when it’s coupled to a gooseneck ball? I see it is saying I should do so on the product page. thank you, carl

Carl, great question - and yes, anytime a fifth-wheel trailer is converted to a gooseneck-style connection, chains are required. Even though the Nomad bolts to your trailer in place of the pin box, the truck connection is now a gooseneck ball, so it follows gooseneck rules which means it needs another point of contact to the truck bed to be legally compliant and safe.

Gen-Y makes it easy by offering the # GY49GR safety chain kit, which attaches directly to the cross-shaped chain points already built into the Nomad. It’s the cleanest, most secure way to keep everything compliant.

You won't need anything else to install the Gen-Y Nomad # GY37ND on your trailer so that you can get rid of your bulky 5th wheel hitch in the truck bed, and use a gooseneck ball instead! Let me know if you need anything else, as I'm happy to help!
