What Flat Tow Wiring do I Need for My 2020 Chevrolet Equinox? Do I Have Variable Voltage?

Updated 11/06/2025 | Published 10/31/2025

Question:

I am thinking of buying the Roadmaster Smart Diode Kit for Variable Voltage Incandescent Tail Lights - 7-to-6-Way Adapter Cord. So how do I find out if I have led lamps and if they are variable voltage? Thanks for your help.

Hello Thomas,

I can take some of the guesswork out for you. Every sub-model of the 2020 Chevy Equinox uses variable voltage (multiplex) tail lights, meaning the same wire handles both the tail/running light and the brake light by varying the voltage level.

To find out if you have LED tail lights, start by visually inspecting the lamps. If you can clearly see filament bulbs inside the housing, your lights are incandescent (please refer to the image I attached). If instead you see several small light-emitting diodes (LEDs) or a circuit board behind the lens, then they are LED.

If you have LEDs, you’ll want the Roadmaster Smart Diode Kit for Variable Voltage LED Tail Lights - 7-Way to 6-Way Adapter Cord # RM38FR.

For incandescent bulbs, you’ll want the Roadmaster Smart Diode Kit for Variable Voltage Incandescent Tail Lights - 7-to-6-Way Adapter Cord # RM26FR.

Once you’ve had a chance to take a look, please let me know which type of bulbs you have. Are you new to flat towing, or just setting up a new vehicle?

Thanks for the info. I looked at the tail/break light that I have. It looks like the incandescent bulb but with one filament so I think it is variable voltage incandescent. Also right now I am flat towing my 2020 Equinox and I am using magnetic light for my turn/break/tail lights and I just want to make it easier to hook up and go. Thanks again for your help. @ThomasP My pleasure Thomas! I would trade out the magnetic lights as well. Roadmaster is definitely the way to go, the diodes usually outlive the car. If you ever have any other questions in the future, you know where to find us. Safe travels =)
