Can 2016 Toyota Prius Carry Kuat NV 2.0 Base Bike Rack With 2-Bike Add-On

Updated 09/30/2025 | Published 09/27/2025

Question:

I have a gen 4 Prius 2016 Im thinking about installing EcoHitch 2 hitch and getting a platform bike rack like Kuat or Thule, which comes with add on to extend from 2 bikes to 4 bikes. We have two bikes around 22lb and two around 30lb. The only thing to prevent me from pulling the trigger is that Im not sure if the Prius can handle 4 bike platform, regarding weight balance or clearance. When I tried to search online people with Prius mainly getting 1.25 hitch so no more than 2 bikes, but thats just the hitch size not the car itself. I was wondering if there are customers here with gen 4 Prius who got 2 hitch and 4 bike platform rack. Thank you for your time.

Hi Kat; there is a lot of mixed information on the capacity of the 2016 Prius. It doesn't look like anything is specifically listed in the owner's manual so I would check with your local dealer to see if they can provide you with that information. The EcoHitch # EH53VR can handle it but the capacity of the hitch most certainly exceeds that of the vehicle.

The Kuat NV 2.0 Base Bike Rack # BA22B weighs 52 lbs and the add-on # BA02B weighs 40 lbs. Add your bikes to that and you need to be capable of holding 196 lbs of tongue weight. On a smaller vehicle like that the limit is typically 150-200 lbs so it may be possible but you will have to confirm it through Toyota first.
