Replacement Leaf Springs for Travel Trailer With 3,500 lb Dexter Axles

Updated 10/22/2025 | Published 09/25/2025

Question:

I need to replace leaf springs on my travel trailer 3500 Dexter axles. Can I upgrade to say a 5000lb leaf spring without issue? Would any other components need to be changed as well?

Hey Shaun! You can upgrade your leaf spring capacity but you don't want to go too high or you'll get a rough ride. I recommend sticking with something more in the 4k or 4,400 lb range for added strength that isn't overkill. You won't need additional parts but you will need to match your current leaf spring measurement. The flat measurement will be the most accurate but spring eye to spring eye also works. See the article I linked further down on this page which explains how to measure.

For example, if your leaf springs measure 26" eye to eye or if your overall flat length is 28" you could replace them with the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,000-lb Trailer Axles - 26" Long # e22YR. If you're worried about stronger suspension parts I also recommend adding the MORryde Suspension Upgrade Kit with wet bolts and 1/2" thick shackle straps. You will want to measure your existing shackles to find the right fit for this as well. If you have 2-1/4" (center hole to center hole) you need # MR46ZR and for 3-1/8" # MR76ZR.

If you have a different leaf spring measurement go ahead and add it in the comments below and I'll see what is available for a replacement.

Hey Shaun, how did things go with the 4,000‑lb leaf springs for your trailer’s Dexter axles? Did the ride feel smoother with that setup? Your feedback could really help others thinking about a similar upgrade.
