Looking For Way To Add Brakes To 1993 Boat Trailer

Updated 10/22/2025 | Published 09/25/2025

Question:

Hello, I need to add brakes to a 1993 boat trailer. It has a 1.5in square axle that is 72and1/8in between hub faces, spring centers are 61” The hub is a 4 lug bolt dico 4082 with bearing buddy 1980 and 13in wheels. It does not have a brake flange and I have not found an easy way to mount one. Do you have any recommendations? I am also open to a replacement axle. Do you have a recommendation for a complete kit with axle, brakes, and hubs?

Hello Daniel, thanks for reaching out. Adding brake flanges is a potential option, but I am sorry to say we do not offer a brake flange for a 1.5" square axle. You would have to either find a supplier, or have a fab shop make one for you.

Keep in mind that brake flanges must be welded on at a precise angle, so typically we recommend having this done by a professional axle shop.

Typically, replacing the axle entirely would be much easier and less expensive. We do not offer an axle that matches your specs though. The closest we have would be a 72" hub face axle like part # e62YR. This is 2,000 lb rated, it has a round tube but does not have a brake flange. We do offer one that could be added, but that kind of puts us back at square one.

We could provide an axle with brakes, but it would not match your HF and SC requirements.

Hey Daniel, were you able to find a shop that could add brake flanges to your 1.5-inch square axle or decide to go with a replacement axle instead? Knowing what route worked best could help others trying to add brakes to older boat trailers.
