Can SumoSprings be Used to Replace an Air Bag Kit on a 1987 Toyota Truck?

Updated 09/13/2025 | Published 09/04/2025

Question:

Will your part number: SS79PV be able to replace my leaking airbags on the rear axle of my 1987 Toyota 2-WD pickup truck motorhome and take some load off of the rear leaf springs, even at-rest?

Hey Don!

The SumoSprings Custom Helper Springs # SS79PV are a great alternative to aftermarket air bags on your 1987 Toyota. These will engage on an as-needed basis when your OEM suspension needs help, so if your suspension needs help when you're parked, these will help.

Are you done with trying to upkeep air bags?

Jon, I am done with airbags. Are you sure the SS89PV wouldn't be better for my RV (than the SS79PV) since it has 4000 lbs on the rear axle?

@DonB The Kit # SS89PV will offer more support, yes. I was just refencing the kit that you had asked about. Quick question for you before you purchase anything; do you have the truck version, or do you have a motorhome version (which would be a cab and chassis)? For the cab and chassis model we only have the Timbren Kit # TTOR2002 rated for 6,000 lbs, and it only fits the 1-ton version. Which one do you have?

@JonG Yes, I have a Class C motorhome built on a long bed 1-ton Toyota pickup chassis, so the TTOR2002 looks like it would indeed be better suited for my application. I'll have to eyeball the area to make sure it'll fit in place of the busted airbags.

@DonB Glad we got that cleared up before you purchased anything! Let me know if you have any other questions!
