I don't have the best news for you, Michael.

Your 2001 BMW Z3 cannot be flat towed and due to this, no one makes a base plate for it. I did a bunch of searching around and it looked like people have successfully used tow dollies, like the Roadmaster Tow Dolly with Electric Brakes - 4,250 lbs # RM-2050-1, with manual transmissions, but most used a trailer with all 4 wheel off the ground. Towing it in this fashion is the way I recommend as BMW still doesn't recommended using the tow dolly option.

If you decide to go with the dolly though, you will want to make sure the transmission is in neutral and the vehicle is turned on. You will also need wiring to get the brakes on the dolly activated and I recommend grabbing the etrailer Trailer Wiring 7-Way Upgrade Kit w/ Junction Box and RV Style Connector # e99011 if the towing vehicle has a 7-way. If it has a different kind of plug, just let me know and I can find a more suitable options for that.

What are you wanting to tow your Z3 with?
