Will the Travelbox 2.0 RV Heater be enough for cold-weather tent camping over night?

Updated 09/03/2025 | Published 08/11/2025

Question:

We’re doing elk season in Montana and camping in a wall tent at 8,000 feet. Would the Travelbox 2.0 keep us warm at night without needing a generator? located in Bozeman

Travis, that’s exactly what the Travelbox RV Heater # AU36MR was built for. It’s fully self-contained, so you don’t need to wire anything or run a generator; just place it outside, run the duct inside, and press the button. Autoterm says it has the fuel capacity to run up to 9 hours in the cold, so that should be plenty for overnight without any other power sources.

It runs clean at up to 13,700 feet and keeps pumping dry heat down to -40°F. If you’re out there multiple nights, bring extra diesel and a way to top off the battery. In that case you may need to charge off the vehicle's 12v system, or a generator or power station.

What type of tent are you using?

That sounds solid, Andrew. With the temps dropping into the teens, do you think I should bring a backup heat source just in case? and it's a big ozark trail canvas tent. really tall

@Travis Good thinking, Travis. The Travelbox will keep a big tent warm even in the teens, especially if you’ve got a liner or insulated panels like on those canvas ones, but I always recommend a backup for peace of mind - even just a small propane buddy heater or extra heavy sleeping bags. Always prepare for something going wrong when going that far into the cold. Diesel heaters are super reliable, but it never hurts to have a plan B when you’re 8,000 feet up in Montana. How many people are you camping with on this trip?
