Troubleshooting Leaf Spring Coming In Contact With Brake Mounting Flange Bolt

Updated 09/03/2025 | Published 08/07/2025

Question:

The caliper mounting bracket lines up with the axle flange only one way. This results in the caliper mounting in the 11-12 oclock position. When in this position, it looks like the leaf spring may hit one of the caliper mounting bolts. If the bracket is turned in any other position, then it is only able to utilize 4 of the 5 flange holes. Will using 4 of the flange mounting holes work? DeeMaxx DE28YR kit is what I have for a 6000 pound axle.

Hey Eric,

Using only 4 of the 5 mounting holes on # DE28YR is not recommended when installing new brakes. There is a chance of failure that could cause a lot more problems, it is best to install them exactly how they should be. With that said by far the most common cause of that is a sagging leaf spring, or damaged springs/hangers or other suspension components. Since the brakes are brand new its likely an issue with the suspension components.

I would inspect your suspension and see if anything is noticeably damaged. If not you may have worn out suspension parts causing them to sag into a position that interferes. The leaf spring should not be close to contacting that bolt which makes me think the springs are flattened out causing that and would need to be replaced. When was the last time any suspension components were replaced?

The suspension components have never been replaced, and this is a 2003 Fifth Wheel. I will check into replacing with new leaf springs. Thank you for your answer.

@EricF I am gonna go with the leaf springs being that issue. They flatten out over time and if they have not been changed chances are they are pretty worn down. Let me know if you take a look and see how they look. I can help walk you through how to find the correct replacements as well.

@NickS-I found a bracket that solved my problem and allowed me to mount the calipers at the 3 o'clock position. The brackets I found are this part#. DE46QR Hopefully, if there is anyone in the future that incurs the same problem I had, this information can help them. BTW, with my leaf springs being 22 years old, I opted to upgrade my suspension to the Road Master Comfort Ride System. I am in the process of installing this kit now. Thank you for your assistance. -Eric F.
