Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Upgrade for 235/75-15 Tires on a Travel Trailer
Ideally, you'll want the combined capacity of your tires to meet or exceed the GVWR of your trailer. If your unloaded trailer weight is 5000 lbs and the combined load capacity of your tires is 5820 lbs, you've only got about 800 lbs of remaining tire capacity for your gear/water/propane, which would explain why you're concerned about blowouts. Your current tires sound like they're not rated high enough. We don't offer a 15 inch tire that's rated higher than what you currently have,...

  • Availability of 16 Wheel to Fit 5.2K Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly with 6 on 5-1/2 Pattern
Yes, we have a variety of wheels and tire/wheel combos for 16" wheels that are compatible with the 6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern of the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # 8-213-5UC1. For a combination tire mounted on the wheel you could go with The Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Tire w 16" White Spoke Wheel # AM32764. . The white spoke wheel is a little plain but it is pretty common for trailers. If you'd like something else then I have attached a link with our selection that you can filter through.

  • Spring Hanger Spacing Dimensions for a Tandem Axle Slipper Spring Suspension on a 14,0000 lb Trailer
The hanger spacing for a tandem axle trailer suspension setup can be determined, but you need to take into account the axle spacing needed for the overall diameter of your wheel and tire combination and the springs you will be using. Lets say that you plan on using 4 of the 5-Leaf Slipper Springs, # e74SR, for 7,000-lb Trailer Axles, and that your wheel and tire combinations are the Karrier ST235/85R16 Wheel and Tire, # AM32764. The AM32764 wheel and tires overall diameter is 31.61 inches,...

  • High-Pressure Tire Valve Stem for 110-PSI Tires
It is usually the tire valve stem that matters when upgrading trailer tires to a higher load range that needs higher psi pressure. A bolt-in metal valve stem like # AM20906 handles pressure up to 200-psi and it includes two grommets so that it will fit a rim hole of either 0.453 or 0.625 inches. You will use only the one grommet that fits your rim. Rubber valve stems usually top out at 100-psi, as with # AM20907. The tire you referenced # AM10501 is a Load Range F in size ST235/85R16...

  • Can 225/75-15 be Replaced with 235/85-16 Size Tire on Trailer
The overall diameter with a 235/85-16 will be 3.2 inches taller than a 225/75-15. Since the additional diameter is split on either side of the hub that means you would have 1.6 inches less fender clearance. The width difference would be one centimeter. If you have an 8 lug wheel you would want the part # TTWA16RGWSHD which comes with a tire rated for 81 mph or if you have a 6 lug wheel you would want the part # AM32764.

You could go with the tire already mounted ST235/80R16 Radial Tire Wheel - 6 on 5-1/2 # AM32764 or the ST235/80R16 Radial Tire w 16" White Spoke Wheel - 8 on 6-1/2 # AM34903 depending on your bolt pattern.

  • Can Trailer Tires Be Changed From 15 Inch To 16 Inch If Trailer Has Frame Clearance Issues
The standard offset for trailer wheels is zero to keep the load on the trailer centered on the tire. The Karrier ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire with 16 inch White Wheel - 6 on 5-1/2 - Load Range E, item # AM32764, comes with a 0 inch offset wheel, is 235 millimeters wide and has an overall height of 31.61 inches. Your 225R-75-15 is approximately 28.3 inches in height and will be 10 millimeters, .39 inches, thinner than the ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire. I would recommend staying with...

  • Recommended Tires and Wheels to Replace 8.75 x 16.5 Trailer Tires
To replace the 8.75 x 16.5 tires on your trailer, I recommend going with an ST235/85R16 size, which will be the closest to what you have but on a 16 inch wheel. The lowest load rating we have available for this size is a Load Range E. If the hubs on your trailer have an 8 on 6-1/2 inch bolt pattern, I recommend the Kenda Karrier Radial Trailer Tire with 16 Inch White Wheel # AM32739. If your hubs instead have a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern, then you will want the Kenda Karrier tire and...

  • Can 16.5 Inch Trailer Wheels and Tires be Replaced with 16 Inch Trailer Wheels and Tires
You can go from a 16.5 to 16 inch trailer tire and wheel provided that the tire and wheel combos you go with have the capacity for the trailer. The highest capacity 16 inch combo that we have is going to be # TA76FR rated for 4,400 pounds at 110 psi. The trailer would have to have 3 axles for a total of 6 tires at 4,080 pounds capacity each to reach the capacity of your trailer. Since the 16 inch wheels are smaller than the 16.5 inch you can go to the smaller size provided the capacity...

  • Widest and Shortest Tire Size for 5,200 lb Axle with 6 Lug Bolt Pattern
Is your bolt pattern a 6 on 5-1/2 inch or a 5 on 6-1/2 inch like you mentioned? I believe you are looking for 6 on 5-1/2 inch as that is the standard size. For 15 inch tire sizes that would at least match your axle capacity you'd need to go with a 225/75-15 in the Load Range of E like the # AM32680 which has a width of 9.37 inch and a height of 28.4 inch diameter. Then for the 16 inch size you'd want the 235/80-16 like # AM32764 which has a width of 9.37 inch and has an overall height...

  • How to Determine the Correct Tire Size for a 6,000 Pound 23 Foot Travel Trailer
There should be a sticker or plate on the trailer tongue or frame somewhere that lists the proper tires for that trailer. You can also check the tire size on the trailer now and go by that. Based on the gross trailer weight at 6,000 pounds, if it is a single axle it likely takes 235/80-16 or 235/85-16 tires. If it has 2 axles then they are likely 14 or 15 inch tires. I have linked some articles on trailer tires for you that should also help.

  • Correct Tire Pressure For ST205/75-15 Tires On 2,000 Lb Trailer
I did some research and for your tires I found that the maximum pressure posted on the manufacturer site was 50 psi. Typically, the tire pressure should be set to the maximum that is listed on the sidewall of the tire. Tire pressure should be checked and adjusted when the tire is cold and filled to the maximum amount listed for better performance. At the maximum air pressure, the tires will perform and wear best, and get the best gas mileage. If a trailer tire is inflated to a lower...

  • How to Determine the Correct Wheel and Tire Combination for a 1999 Escort Boat Trailer
When selecting a wheel and tire for your boat trailer you should go with the manufacturer recommendation for tire size or, if there is no manufacturer recommendation, you should use the trailer axle capacity to determine the best wheel and tire combination for your trailer. It sounds as if your trailer axle or axles are going to be rated for 5,000 pounds or more. If you have a tandem axle trailer, it is likely that you have two 3,500 lb axles. • Changing 235/85-R15 Tires to 235/85R-16 on 24ft Trailer
The ST235/85-R15 tire would be about 3-1/8 inches in diameter larger. This will move your tire just a bit more than 1-1/2 inches closer to the inside of your fender. As a general rule of thumb, you will want about 3 inches of clearance between the tire and the underside of the fender when the trailer is fully loaded. If you can maintain that clearance with the larger tires, stepping up to the larger size will work just fine for you.

These combinations are the correct bolt pattern but they are obviously slightly larger with a section width of 9.37 inches and an outer diameter of 31.61 inches. This tire/wheel combo has an 8 on 6-1/2" bolt pattern. If you need a bolt pattern of 6 on 5-1/2" then you will want part # AM32764 instead. For a tire to be rated for use on a trailer, the tire will need to have a ST (special trailer) prefix before the tire size or an LT prefix after the tire size.
