If you will not be carrying the kayak very often then you could use some foam blocks like # SR5525. You will not have to have a roof rack to use these blocks. The straps route through the interior of the vehicle and the kayak rests on the blocks. The kit also includes tie downs for the bow and stern.
If you want to go with a roof rack and your 2004 Mazda 3 hatch back has fixed mounting points then using Yakima roof rack # Y00425, # Y53TR, # Y07204, # Y00248 with kayak carrier # Y04073 would be a great option.
You will be able to determine if the vehicle has fixed points by checking the outsides of the roof line. There would be little panel you can pop off and that is where the feet of a roof rack would attach.
If your Mazda 3 does not have fixed points then you can use Rhino-Rack roof rack using the following parts:
Crossbars # RRVA118B-2
Feet # RRRLKVA
Custom DK Clamps and Pads # DK041
And you could use kayak carrier # RR570 with this rack.
