Replacement AC for 1998 Class C RV With Dometic CAL 136

Updated 08/03/2025 | Published 07/29/2025

Question:

Hello, nice to meet you. I currently own a 1998 Class C cab-over RV. The air conditioner a Dometic CAL 136 isn’t performing well, so I’m considering replacing it. I’m interested in switching to a 12V rooftop air conditioner, but I’m concerned that the output might be too low. I’m also planning to upgrade to a lithium battery system. Could you please recommend a good solution? Thank you in advance.

Hi Takuya; a 12V AC unit like the Velit 2000R RV AC w/ Remote # VE87QV only has an 8,000 Btu capacity. Your current AC is 13,500 so that is a big step down and you probably won't be happy with that setup. Instead, I recommend the Advent Air RV Air Conditioner System # ADV95SR.

This will match your 13,500 Btu capacity and has the option for a heat strip # ACMHD. Everything has moved to the new R32 refrigerant so a complete replacement will be necessary. This includes the air distribution box, thermostat, and a start capacitor.

Any big trips coming up with your RV?
