Hello Gregory,
If you're wondering whether it's time to replace the idler hub on your trailer, there are a few signs to watch for. Start by looking for visible damage: cracks, bends, or heavy rust can all mean the hub is compromised. A little surface rust isn’t a big deal, but deep pitting, especially around the bearing areas or lug studs, is a red flag. Also check the wheel studs; if they’re loose, stripped, or bent, it could be safer to replace the hub than try to fix them.
Another thing to check is the fit of the bearing races. These should be tight inside the hub. If they’re loose or have been spinning in place, the hub is probably worn out. Pay attention to how the trailer feels when towing, too as wobbling or vibrations could point to a warped hub or uneven wear. And if you notice metal shavings in the grease when servicing the bearings, that’s a sign something’s wearing out inside.
At the end of the day, if the hub looks solid and everything fits snugly, you might be fine just replacing the bearings and seals. But if you spot any of the issues above, it's usually smarter and safer to just go ahead and replace the whole hub. It’s peace of mind when you’re out on the road.
You asked the question on a 3,500 pound idler hub # AKIHUB-545-35-K, so if you do not have brakes and you axle is rated for 3,500 pounds, that will be the one you need. If you inspect your hub and everything seems to be fine, but you notice some wear on the bearing and races, you will need the # BK2-100 bearing kit. If you do not have grease on hand, grab some LubriMatic Prime Guard High Temperature Wheel Bearing Grease # L11380.
If you do have brakes, please let me know.
What kind of trailer are you working on? What kind of issues have you noticed?

Hey Gregory, How did your inspection of the trailer hub go? Did you find any signs that it needed replacing, or were you able to just replace the bearings and seals? I'm asking because your experience could really help others in a similar situation.
