Why Might Trailer Brake Controller Have Weaker Brakes on One Side of Trailer

Question:

Ive had the Curt Echo wireless brake controller for several months. Its been good but I do occasionally experience locking up at slow speeds, just before a stop. It seems to work fine at higher speeds. Ive tried hooking it up in the recommended order but that doesnt seem to matter. It always works fine for a while and then after a few hours seems to act up again. My question is a bit different though. I took off the wheels/hubs to inspect the brakes. Everything looks good. I hooked up the tow vehicle with the Curt Echo installed and I am using the app on my phone to apply the brakes while I spin the hubs. On the driver side, with the minimum output of 5, its enough to stop the hub spinning, but when I try to turn the hub manually after stopping with the brake button still pressed. I can still turn it. It has resistance, but it still turns. That is what I would expect with an applied power of 5. On the passenger side, when I perform the same test, the brakes are completely locked and I cannot turn the hub at all even trying with great force. On both wheels the brakes are adjusted on the looser side. I can hear a very slight drag without the brakes applied so this isnt a case of the brakes being adjusted too tight. Why would one side be applying the brakes so much tighter? Is it possible that the voltage going to one side is greater than the voltage going to the other resulting in this difference. Is there a place to test that voltage without damaging the wires and what would the expected voltages be? Im kind of suspecting this might be related to the lock ups Im seeing at low speeds. What else can I do to further test or adjust this. Ive even tried adjusting the passenger side to be very loose, and when the brake is applied this is still happening. Hey Rob, the only way the brake controller could deliver different braking pressures to both sides of the trailer would be an issue with wiring. I would go over the wiring looking for any cuts or exposed wire and see if you can fixe it. Also make sure the ground wire of the assembly on the weaker side is making a solid connection as well.

Hey Rob, how did it go with checking the wiring and the ground connection on the weaker side? I'm curious to know if that helped with the brake issue, as it could be useful for others facing similar problems.
