How do I Figure Out How Much I am Able to Tow With My Truck?
Updated 09/02/2025 | Published 06/21/2025 >
Question:
I have a 2016 GMC 2500 Denali 6.6 Duramax. VIN is 1GT12UE84GF254595. I have searched for days trying to figure out what size 5th wheel I can tow. Some sites say 13,900 and some say 18,000 lbs when properly equipped whatever that means. Can I possibly get an answer for someone who is an expert at this? I cant purchase the 5th wheel or the hitch until Im sure. Thank you for your time

Hello Joe,
Happy to bring some clarification to you. I do not have a database that supplies me with what each vehicle can tow, and to get a definite answer it is always best to reach out to the manufacturer GMC.
1. Locate the Truck’s GVWR and GCWR
- You’ll need to find your Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) and Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). These are typically found in your owner’s manual or on the sticker on the driver’s door jamb.
For a 2016 GMC 2500HD Denali 4x4 Crew Cab standard box with 6.6L Duramax, typical ratings are (you will need to confirm):
- GVWR: ~10,000 lbs (depending on configuration)
- GCWR: ~25,100 lbs (with 3.73 rear axle and proper equipment)
- Curb Weight: ~8,600 lbs
2. Calculate Max 5th Wheel Tow Rating
The formula is:
- 25,100 lbs (GCWR) - 8,600 lbs (Curb Weight) = 16,500 lbs
The curb weight will vary though, you need to consider the weight of passengers and cargo.
3. Consider Payload Capacity
-The payload capacity (sticker on door jamb) tells you how much weight you can carry in the truck bed, including the pin weight (tongue weight) of a fifth wheel (typically 15–25% of the trailer's loaded weight).
I am sorry I cannot give you a definite answer, but there is the formula to get it. You could always take a picture of the sticker on your door jam, I am happy to take a look.
What kind of 5th wheel are you looking at?
