Best Flat Tow Setup For 2017 Jeep Wrangler Willys Unlimited

Updated 07/01/2025 | Published 06/06/2025

Question:

I just bought an RV towing capacity 5000 lbs and a 2017 Jeep wrangler Willy’s unlimited. I want to buy a towing system to tow Jeep with RV. There are just too many options. Can someone help me out a system together? I have a base plate but not sure it is the right one for my jeep. I want a good braking system for the car as well to reduce stress on the RV. Help!

Hello Angela, you came to the right place. We can provide everything you need to tow your 2017 Jeep Wrangler Willys Unlimited behind your RV. I will start will a list of parts, followed by a few important notes about flat towing your vehicle. Here is what I recommend:

- etrailer Invisible Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms # e98949

- etrailer SD Non-Binding Tow Bar - RV Mount - 2" Hitch - 6,000 lbs # e34ZR

- Roadmaster 4-Diode Universal Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles - 7-Way to 6-Way Coiled Adapter Cord # RM-15267

- Demco Stay-IN-Play Duo Flat Tow Brake System for RVs w/ Hydraulic Brakes - Proportional # SM99251

- Roadmaster Battery Charge Line Kit for Towed Vehicles # RM-156-25

That will cover all the main components. Keep in mind the base plate is intended for vehicles with the standard factory bumper without any winches or guards.

The light kit and brake system install permanently on the vehicle. This makes setup much easier when you are ready to tow. You just get the vehicle set up, connect your tow bar, safety cables and electrical cord and you are ready to tow.

The charge line kit is recommended since the brake system does put a small amount of drain on the battery. The Demco brake system is extremely reliable. I recommend it almost 100% of the time.

You may end up needing a drop hitch like part # BLU28XR to compensate for any height differences between the base plate arms and the hitch on your RV. Any difference of more than 3" will require a drop hitch.

I also recommend getting a cover# e76FV and a lock # C23519 to protect your tow bar. This is especially recommended if you plan to store the tow bar on the back of your RV.

As with any flat tow setup I do recommend you check your owners manual and read over all the information pertaining to flat towing.

Is this your first time flat towing? If you have any question on any of this I am happy to assist. Replying on this page is the fastest way to get ahold of me.

I was wrong about the year of the jeep. It is 2021. Does that make a difference in part numbers?

@Angela Ah yes I am glad you mentioned that because it does make a difference for a few parts. For the base plate you will want to use the etrailer Invisible Base Plate Kit # e98948 instead of the # e98949 I mentioned above. Then for the wiring kit, if your vehicle is equipped with ParkSense, you will need to use the # RM63MR kit instead of the # RM-15267. If you do not have ParkSense, the # RM-15267 will work fine. Other than that, the rest of the parts will be the same.

@JesseM how do I know if my vehicle has park sense? What is park sense? Also I need the tie bar too.

@Angela the ParkSense is a safety feature Jeep offers. It has park assist and blind spot monitoring. There would be a parksense switch below the Uconnect display. The switch is used to turn the system on or off.
