Question:
I purchased a travel trailer in 2023 from a dealer who sold me a Curt WDH 17499. The trailer has a loaded weight rating of 7,000lbs which we pretty much reach loaded up for a trip. Ive used it for 2 years and have gone thru CAT scales several times. I typically see tongue weight exceeding 800 lbs, more like 900-1,000. For a 7000lb trailer 15 TW is 1,050lbs. So they underrated the WDH for my setup. Can I upgrade the capacity of the 14799 buy purchasing the 800-1,000lb trunnion bars from the 17500? Also what is the performance risk of continuing as is?

Hello Jim, thanks for reaching out. It does sound like the Curt # C17499 is underrated for your setup. So you probably are not getting as effective leveling and sway control as you should. It might still work a little bit, but you are running a risk since the bars and head unit are overloaded. It is pretty common for dealerships to do this unfortunately. They just sell you whatever they have, and they don't care what happens to you after you leave the lot.
Sadly, the spring bars on the # C17499 and the # C17500 are not interchangeable. The two systems use different head units, so you would need to change out more than just the bars. You would need two new bars part # C17536 and a new head unit # C17507. That would be less expensive than buying a whole new system, but not by that much. If it were my I would probably just go ahead and but the new system and see about selling the old one.

Thanks for the reply. It’s too bad the dealers don’t do a more thorough analysis to insure the buyer gets the optimum and safest setup. It’s also easier to buy a better product even if it costs more at that point since it’s a small increase in the grand scheme of the purchase. Thanks.
